Meet Your ALNBCT Network Board of Directors: Gay Barnes, Outreach: North Alabama

Gay F. Barnes is a first grade teacher at Horizon Elementary School in Madison, Alabama. She began her teaching career in 1987 as a multi-age classroom teacher and has since taught first, second, third and fourth grades as well as serving as a Reading Coach. Additionally, Gay has served as an adjunct professor at Alabama A&M University, Samford University, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

Gay graduated from Alabama A&M University in 2007 with a PhD in Literacy/Reading Education and holds both a Master of Arts and Education Specialist degree in Elementary Education from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. In 2001, Gay became a National Board Certified Teacher as an Early Childhood Generalist and renewed her certification in 2010. Gay served as the 2012 Alabama Teacher of the year and was selected as a 2012 National Teacher of the Year Finalist.

Gay also serves as a consultant and speaker about literacy, early childhood education, and the value and impact of educators.
