Gay F. Barnes is a first grade teacher at Horizon Elementary School in Madison, Alabama. She began her teaching career in 1987 as a multi-age classroom teacher and has since taught first, second, third and fourth grades as well as serving as a Reading Coach. Additionally, Gay has served as an adjunct professor at
University, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Alabama A&M University
Gay graduated from
in 2007 with a
PhD in Literacy/Reading Education and holds both a Master of Arts and Education
Specialist degree in Elementary Education from the University of Alabama at
Birmingham and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Alabama in
Huntsville. In 2001, Gay became a National Board Certified Teacher as an Early
Childhood Generalist and renewed her certification in 2010. Gay served as the
2012 Alabama Teacher of the year and was selected as a 2012 National Teacher of

Gay also serves as a consultant and speaker about literacy, early childhood education, and the value and impact of educators.
